More than a dozen leading conservative figures recently adopted a statement of constitutional conservative principles called the Mount Vernon Statement. This statement recommits conservatives to the core principles upon which our nation was founded.

As a common-sense conservative whose own personal values run deep, to the very heart of our Constitution, I am proud to endorse this statement and join this movement.

The statement warns that the liberties and values present at our country’s founding are under constant attack today. “The self-evident truths of 1776 have been supplanted by the notion that no such truths exist. The federal government today ignores the limits of the Constitution, which is increasingly dismissed as obsolete and irrelevant,” the statement reads.

I am firmly committed to restoring the integrity of our government by insisting on strict adherence to the U.S. Constitution in every decision Congress makes. The statement provides broad goals for conservatives as we fight back against the erosion of our liberties, and work to return our country to its founding values:

• A commitment to limited government and the rule of law
• A focus on personal freedom and liberty
• Support for free enterprise and market-driven economic growth
• A strong defense of America’s national interests, tempered with wisdom
• An absolute commitment to traditional family values, respect for life, and freedom of religion

These are values I have long held dear, and I have worked for these principles for more than 20 years as a volunteer and conservative activist in our community.

There are other important issues for conservatives to tackle, and I will lead the fight to stop government spending, reduce our debt, secure our right to bear arms, protect our borders, respect the right of States to self-govern, and more.

The Mount Vernon Statement is an excellent framework for returning our country to its founding principles, and a platform for conservatives to build on well into the 21st Century.
