More Troubling Government Action, But One Ray of “Sunshine”

These days there are so many scary things going on in Washington it’s hard to pick out one or two to focus on. That makes it even more important for our leaders to be well grounded in strong conservative philosophies, so they can react quickly when proposals threaten our liberties.

The conversation on the web about the problems with Obamacare, the President’s plan to radically upend the world’s best health care system through government-run health insurance, just keeps going and going and going.

The latest plan from Obama would centralize enormous power to control financial firms across the spectrum in the hands of one agency, a government-sponsored entity like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (and we all know how well that worked out). This agency could seize any company perceived as too big to fail in the financial sector. This is a very dangerous proposal, and a member of Congress should responsibly question this power grab when recent history shows government intervention to be the cause of many problems. UPDATE: This Republican response is a very good alternative.

The one ray of “sunshine” should properly be called a “sunset.” The Republican Study Committee introduced the RSC Sunset Caucus, which includes 7 congressman from Texas, including co-chair Rep. Kevin Brady. This group is committed to reviewing every federal government program to determine its effectiveness and ongoing usefulness. Programs that are no longer viable or reasonable would be targeted for closure.

Texas has a similar Sunset Law for state programs, that requires regular reviews to ensure we are operating efficiently and effectively. Doing this at the federal level is a great example of policing government to make sure it works for the people. It’s an effort that our Central Texas congressman should be championing, if he were representing our conservative values.
